Council with The Elder Dragon by CaptainPudgeMuffin Council with The Elder Dragon by CaptainPudgeMuffin
This 3500x2800 pixel 2.49 mb monster took me approximately 24 hours scattered over a 3 day period to make. I increased the canvas size three times. Originally it was just gonna be a the eye and spike. But that seemed kinda meh. Didn't quite capture the setting or the size of the Elder Dragon.

Really not much story behind this. Spike went on a journey to learn about himself...again. But this time he seeks out one of the oldest dragons in existence. One that supposedly knows everything-yadda yadda yadda. Very cliche I know.

My favorite part of this is definitely the Eye. It was the first thing I drew and I gave it as much detail as I could. You can zoom in and see every muscle fiber in the iris.

Enjoy!

EDIT: In hindsight, 3500x2800, while ambitious, is a huge fucking waste of space and buffering time. Especially when most of that extra space is just black nothingness. So I cropped it down to 3500x2000. Really focused everything nicely and we really didn't lose anything...except my signature in the corner. Hang on gotta put that back in.

Elder Dragon: Thank goodness! I think it was stuck in there since Season 1!

This is really quite amazing! Interesting perspective, too; it makes you realize just how huge the difference in scales really is. That dragon has to be positively gargantuan (and, as a corollary, ancient beyond words).

My favorite part of this is definitely the Eye. It was the first thing I drew and I gave it as much detail as I could. You can zoom in and see every muscle fiber in the iris.

The eye's definitely the best part, yes, I agree. :) I'm curious, though, did you opt to not make the original file available on purpose? The above bit rather sounds like that may have been an oversight, and I for one would definitely love to see this picture at its full resolution and in its full glory.

Who's the pony standing right in front of the dragon, BTW?

Yeah I still can't look at it on my nook. Hopefully it isn't a problem for anyone. I want to keep it at full res.

Well I had it set to the original size before, but when I tried looking at it in full size on my Nook tablet I couldn't scroll around to look at it up close when I clicked on it. I could only see the left most side and could only scroll up and down. I'm not sure if this was just an issue of my Nook being a piece of shit knock off of a real tablet or if it was something on Deviant Art, either way I didn't want to screw over anyone using a mobile device. So I set it to a smaller res, in hopes that they could view the whole thing without it being cut off.

Like I said. I'm not sure if it's an isolated issue or if this is the case for everyone. If it isn't actually a problem for mobile users then I will gladly set it back to the full 3500x2000. In fact, I'll put it on full size now, and if people with mobile have a problem viewing it, hopefully they will tell me.

Ah, OK. Hmm, that sounds like an intermittent glitch on DA's part, or maybe a bug. I've never used DA on a tablet, though, so I can't say. :)

Definitely looking forward to the full resolution. :)

=D No kidding. The Elder has to be very careful around such tiny creatures. Blinking would cause a gust that could knock them off the cliff.

This dragon must be the size of Mount Everest. The square-cube law indicates that it probably couldn't move much at his age without his body falling apart.

Now there's a pleasant thought. Maybe he's just got a really big head? Like he's simply disproportionate? Also what is this square-cube law and what does it say?

It reminds me of the story for this drawing: [link]

Indeed, this drawing is ludicrously detailed. The way the majority of it is in the eye is actually fitting--it makes me think of it being the chief focus point. All them fibers are impressive, as is that couple of red veins. I also very much like the scales and the striations on his spikes and what seems to be the base of horns. Makes for a very impressive and definitely 'old' look. And them crystals are really nice, despite being sketchy--the added backlighting makes them work much better. And finally, I love how Twily is peeking out from behind that rock, and that you still managed to make her body appear fully and did so in a precise way, from her mane to her barely-visible tail and rear legs.
Great job! Very much so!
